Client Overview

HDFC Life Insurance is one of India’s premier life insurance companies,

known for its innovation, reliability, and strong technology backbone.

Operating with a 24x7 commitment to service continuity, its data center

located in Airoli is a mission-critical hub housing more than 2,000

servers supporting production workloads.

Project Overview

Project Title: Upgrade of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV)

Scope: Upgrade from RHEV 3.0 to 4.1 on a live production environment

Timeline: 3 working months

Setup:

63 Physical Hypervisors

1 RHEV Manager Node

800+ Virtual Machines

Fully operational 24x7 with strict downtime constraints (Upgrade window: 12

A.M. – 6 A.M. only)

Challenges

Complex Network & Storage Architecture: The existing environment had deep

integration with custom networking layers and multi-tiered storage, increasing

the upgrade complexity.

Refusal by Previous Support Partner: The incumbent support provider backed

out due to high technical risks.

OEM Timeline Estimate: Even Red Hat’s own experts had estimated 7

months for the upgrade.

High-Risk Environment: Being a production environment, any downtime or

failure posed significant business and reputational risks.

Solution Strategy

The project team approached the upgrade in three strategic phases:

Assessment & Planning:

In-depth discovery of network topologies, VM dependencies, and storage

mappings.

Created detailed migration blueprints and rollback plans for each hypervisor

and VM group.

Simulated upgrade in a parallel test environment mirroring production.

Execution Framework:

Adopted a rolling upgrade methodology to isolate risk and maintain uptime.

Upgrades executed strictly within the approved 12 A.M. to 6 A.M. window.

Developed custom scripts for data migration, version compatibility checks,

and service validation.

Monitoring & Optimization:

Post-upgrade monitoring of performance metrics and service availability.

Fine-tuned hypervisor and VM configurations based on new RHEV 4.1

capabilities.

Conducted load testing and failover simulations to ensure operational

resilience.

Results

Successful upgrade of all 63 hypervisors and 800+ VMs within the planned 3-

month window.

Zero unplanned downtime or data loss during the transition.

Enhanced system performance, stability, and security due to the improved

capabilities of RHEV 4.1.

Restored client confidence and positioned the team as a strategic

infrastructure partner.
